PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To provide students from many diverse populations with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to find success in reading and writing and to enable students to develop literacy competencies and skills to function successfully in society. To support teacher instruction and facilitate the use of multisensory processing strategies.

Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree, required
Texas Teaching Certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned or other permits as approved by state, required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Communicate effectively (verbal and written); utilize effective interpersonal and organizational skills; demonstrate knowledge of the reading and writing process; pay close attention to detail; exhibit general knowledge of curriculum and instruction; computer skills, preferred; committed to helping students become successful learners.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Keep informed about current legislation, educational developments, literature and research in the field of education/assigned subject by participating in state and national professional organizations; attend appropriate conferences and staff development sessions; maintain professional growth in the core knowledge area of competency.
- Implement the Dyslexia program as outlined in the professional development sessions provided.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers and/or 504 committee to modify lessons as needed for students with special needs according to guidelines established by Individual Educational Plans or 504-accommodation plans.
- Communicate student progress to the students themselves, to other teachers as appropriate, to the principal and/or instructional leaders, and to parents.
- Plan, prepare and execute lessons, instructional strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students.
- Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives and methods to address the needs of special populations.
- Prepare the classroom and students for the Dyslexia program.
- Monitor students as they work through lessons and intervene, as appropriate and necessary, to provide supplemental instruction, motivation, and encouragement.
- Document and analyze student progress.
- Administer and score all required assessments such as placement tests to select appropriate placement and lessons.
- Utilize appropriate lesson materials/software and check for mastery and review as needed.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible and be a positive role model for students.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social and emotional development of students and take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom adhering to the District Discipline Management Plan in accordance with Board policies, administrative regulations and Individual Education Plans.
- Train all students to successfully and appropriately use the materials/software required for Dyslexia program.
- Establish open lines of communication and maintain a professional relationship with students, parents, colleagues and community members.
- Demonstrate interest and initiative in personal and professional improvement and participate in the campus and District staff development program.
- Safeguard equipment, materials, software, and supplies.
- Use assessment data to modify/adapt lessons to challenge, but not overwhelm students.
- Maintain discretion and confidentiality.
- Demonstrate loyalty within a team approach to District initiatives.
- Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
- Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).
