PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

To lead in the development, coordination and improvement of the total athletic program for the assigned high school; to exercise leadership, administrative, supervisory and teaching skills in ways that promote the development and maintenance of successful athletic programs.  Is responsible for directing and managing the entire function and operation of the football program beginning at the respective middle schools and continuing through the varsity program.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's Degree, required

Texas Teaching Certificate, required

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience as a classroom teacher, required

Work experience, professional experience or professional certification that relates to the nature of the performance responsibilities, required

Three (3) years of successful football coaching experience, required

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Establish, monitor, and supervise a competitive varsity level football program.
  2. Advises the entire football athletic program and coaching staff on policies, methods, strategies, systems and procedural changes.
  3. Establishes the fundamental football philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by coaching staff.
  4. Organizes and plans for off-season training and conditioning for all levels of the football program.
  5. Acts as liaison person in relating the district football program to the staff, administration, community, and local news media.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of board and administrative policies related to athletics and work with the various coaches assigned to the school programs to ensure compliance with those policies.
  7. Interpret applicable local, state and UIL rules and regulations for staff and work with coaches to ensure compliance.
  8. Work with the coaching staffs of the various programs to resolve complaints or disagreements and/or refer the complaints or disagreements to the appropriate administrator in the chain of command.
  9. Assist the district athletic director in developing schedules, arranging transportation and meeting other requirements for tournaments and other special athletic events.
  10. Work with head coaches to coordinate the scheduling of practices and sports activities at the campus.
  11. Work with head coaches and campus athletic trainers to ensure appropriate documentation related to physical examinations, parental consent forms, student eligibility, injury reports, etc
  12. Monitor inventory system which properly identifies, maintains, issues, stores and accounts for athletic equipment.
  13. Provide program orientation and staff development as needed for coaches assigned to the school athletic program of head coaching assignments.
  14. Communicate the basic philosophy and technical approach of the program to appropriate staff.
  15. Work with feeder school coaches to ensure program continuity and vertical alignment.
  16. Interview candidates for assistant coaching vacancies and make recommendations to the principal and district athletic director.
  17. Work with the athletic director as needed to develop campus athletic budget.
  18. Administer the athletic budget of head coaching assignment and monitor the expenditure of all campus athletic budgets.
  19. Work with coaching staff and athletic trainers to prevent injuries, to ensure the health and safety of participants and to provide proper treatment of injuries as they occur.
  20. Provide in a timely manner reports needed for the efficient operation of the program.
  21. Work cooperatively with the principal and faculty to achieve the academic and athletic goals of the school.
  22. Establish and work to maintain positive working relationships with all athletes, staff, administration, and parents.
  23. Work with the staff to establish and maintain a climate that motivates participants to be the best they can.
  24. Prepare recommendations for the improvement of school athletic programs and forward such recommendations to the principal and the district's athletic director for consideration.
  25. Lead the staff in setting and meeting goals and objectives for the school athletic program of assigned head coaching duty.
  26. Analyze staff strengths and assign specific program duties and responsibilities to each assistant coach.
  27. Cooperate with campus principal and athletic director to supervise and evaluate the coaching performance of each staff member.
  28. Serve as an advocate for athletics.
  29. Encourage student athletes to strive for both academic and athletic success
  30. Establish and maintain a system of discipline that enforces the school code of conduct for all students and any rules that have special applications to participants in the athletic program of head coaching assignment.
  31. Travel with student athletes and supervise the team during athletic competitions/events in assigned sports.
  32. Model behavior standards for other coaches and for students that promote successful participation in the school athletic program and encourage winning within the rules.
  33. Continue to develop professional skills through clinics, etc.
  34. Assume primary responsibility for communicating program goals, objectives, rules and regulations to student participants and their parents.
  35. Organize and conduct pre-season orientation meetings for players, parents, coaches and guests.
  36. Establish and maintain positive relations with representatives of the news media, college recruiters, booster club members, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
  37. Provide information about school athletic programs to representatives of the news media.
  38. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
  39. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisors (primary evaluators).

Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; extensive exposure to the elements.  Ability to render first-aid, ability to climb stairs/bleachers, ability to react to emergency situations, ability to walk and run as need.  Must be able to lift over 30 lbs.
